- Admission:
- Start Time(s):
Gallery 339 is pleased to present In Review, a group show featuring 9 artists: Kyohei Abe, Peter Ainsworth, Gabriel Benaim, John Chervinsky, Chang Kim, Joel Lederer, Isa Leshko, Hannah Price, Dustin Ream, and Philip Toledano. Over the past six months, Gallery 339 has had the opportunity to participate in a series of portfolio review sessions, which introduced us to the work of many artists from around the world. None of these sessions were juried, which made the events inconsistent at times, yet exciting in their diversity. Without the filter of a gallery, a curator, an editor, or a selection committee, the sessions seemed to offer a messy yet more complete view of what is happening in contemporary photography. The work that Gallery 339 saw suggested a dynamic and inventive landscape, where artists are making creative use of new and old technologies and are exploring ideas and subject matter that are both current and substantive. Collectively, the works of the ten artists in In Review suggest a medium that is engaged in a lively, complex, and intelligent dialogue about meaningful issues.

Icons of Costume: Hollywood's Golden Era and Beyond features the fashions and accessories worn by luminous film stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn, Audrey Hepburn, Warren Beatty, Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Kelly, Loretta Young, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many others. More than 50 costumes and objects present the still-influential designs of celebrated fashion designers, from the 1940s through the 1990s, including Edith Head, Adrian, Walter Plunkett, Orry-Kelly, Bob Mackie and others of legendary renown. Drawn, in part, from numerous films that were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume, six of them took the Oscar home. Also included are rare publicity stills, lobby cards, jewelry, and film props, as well as an exciting interactive component that lets visitors experience the sights and sounds of the movie studio as well as be a star in their own film scene. Rounding out the exhibition is an hour-long video of 35 memorable clips from films with a distinct Bucks County connection, such as Casablanca, Lassie Come Home, On the Waterfront, West Side Story, The Buddy Holly Story, and A Star is Born.
According to the exhibition's curator, Erika Jaeger-Smith, "These costumes are remarkable survivals, and their impact on today's fashions is immediately recognizable. The unique aspect of this exhibition is its concentration on the early years in Hollywood."

An aspiring writer named Cliff Bradshaw has traveled to Berlin in search of inspiration when he happens upon Sally Bowles at a cabaret called the Kit Kat Klub. The two soon take up in a boarding house run by Fräulein Schneider and her suitor, Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit-shop owner. As the Nazis grow stronger, everyone's lives are thrown into disarray.

The rock-reunion business, once the preserve of Baby Boomer oldies, is bigger than ever these days. The last decade has seen a tsunami of aging alt-rock legends getting the band together and inevitably touring a classic album from their back catalogue in its entirety. The Pixies personify this perhaps better than anyone—they’re more successful now than they ever were back in their heyday—and, all cynicism aside, who can blame them? The fans get exactly what they want: In this case, a celebration of Doolittle, the soundtrack of so many people's long-departed youth, with no nostalgius interruptus by tediously awful new tracks. The band gets the chance to remind all and sundry just how awesomely fucking awesome they were in the first place (and, let’s face it, Black Francis and co. were undeniably awesomely fucking awesome) while making an absolute mountain of cash. It’s a win-win situation all around. -Neil Ferguson

The Live Arts Festival has thoughtfully provided an easy way to sample new Philly dance in eight choreographers/eight new works. Featuring eight rising talents in local dance, the program kicks off with new work from Meg Foley (who regularly performs with the marvelous Nichole Canuso Dance Company) and Megan Mazarick. Inspired by neon lighting and the movement of insects and partly informed by such diverse movement as zombies, crabs and maypole dances, Mazarick’s Neon Gothic is a series of duets that seeks to capture the haunting quality of Flannery O’Connor in movement; and in Match vs. Match, a trio of dancers de- and reconstructs a dance in an examination of relationships. -J.C.R.

Whoa, what a Cinderella-Loverboy-Whitesnake flashback! The Dance Party, out of D.C., parties like it’s 1989, with Rick Springfield’s chugging palm-muted guitars wedded to flash-pot explosions of glam metal, a la Van Halen after a supermodel binge. They’ve even got 80s hair—particularly singer Mick Coogan’s, which is curly and long enough to toss over leather-clad shoulders. Single “Sasha Don’t Sleep,” first off the upcoming major label debut Touch, is either classic or cliché, depending on how many songs you can handle about bad girls who just want to dance. The video is a classic of sorts too, with slutty looking models and bare-bones performance footage in which the synth player (Drew Doucette of the Beauty Pill) is heard but apparently invisible. -J.K.
