Cézanne and Beyond at the Philadelphia Art Museum

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Come experience the Independent Hotel and the remarkable works of Paul Cézanne at the Philadelphia Art Museum February 26, 2009 - May 31, 2009.  The Independent Hotel is just a few short blocks from this historical Philadelphia Museum.

Paul Cézanne’s posthumous retrospective at the Salon d’Automne in 1907 was a watershed event in the history of art. The immediate impact of this large presentation of his work on the young artists of Paris was profound. Its ramifications on successive generations down to the present are still in effect.

This exhibition features forty paintings and twenty watercolors and drawings by Cézanne, displayed alongside works by several artists for whom Cézanne has been a central inspiration and whose work reflects, both visually and poetically, Cézanne’s extraordinary legacy.

Based on the remarkable resources of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, both in its holdings of major works by Cézanne and in its large collections of early modernist works—thanks to A. E. Gallatin and Louise and Walter Arensberg—this show is a unique occasion to experience the continuing impact of this influential painter.

Francis Alÿs (Belgian, born 1959)
“I remember blaming Cézanne (or was it that I blessed him) for having saved me from having to deal with the enigma of painting.”

Max Beckmann (German, 1884–1950)
“Cézanne was my greatest love and still is when I think of French art.”

Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963)
“To my way of thinking, there is no master equal to Cézanne.”

Paul Cézanne (French, 1839–1906)
“In my thought one doesn’t replace the past, one only adds a new link to it.”

Charles Demuth (American, 1883–1935)
“John Marin and I drew our inspiration from the same source, French modernism. He brought his up in buckets and spilt much along the way. I dipped mine out with a teaspoon, but I never spilled a drop.”

Alberto Giacometti (Swiss, 1901–1966)
“Cézanne did not … seek to be original. And yet there is no painter so original as Cézanne.”

Arshile Gorky (American, born Armenia, 1904–1948)
“Cézanne is the greatest artist, shall I say, that has lived.”

Marsden Hartley (American, 1877–1943)
“[Cézanne had] ideas that were to make the world of painting over again.”

Jasper Johns (American, born 1930)
“As for the Cézanne [Bather], it has a synesthetic quality that gives it great sensuality—it makes looking equivalent to touching

Ellsworth Kelly (American, born 1923)
“Cézanne tackled and conceptualized the three-dimensional world in terms of its underlying structure and our uncertain relationships to it.”

Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955)
“[Cézanne’s] influence was so strong that in order to free myself I had to move all the way to abstraction.”

Sherrie Levine (American, born 1947)
“I engage the idea of removing the artist completely from the artwork, so that it becomes a kind of group project with audience participation.”

Brice Marden (American, born 1938)
“Cézanne, my hero.”

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954)
“I thought: If Cézanne is right, I am right. Because I knew Cézanne had made no mistake.”

Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872–1944)
“Beauty in art is created not by the objects of representation but by the relationships of line and color (Cézanne).”

Giorgio Morandi (Italian, 1890–1964)
“We sat down around the big table and talked about art,” John Rewald recalled, “not so much about his [Morandi’s] as about the masters he admired, above all Cézanne and Seurat.”

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)
“[Cézanne] was my one and only master! Don’t you think I looked at his pictures?”

Liubov Popova (Russian, 1889–1924)
“Cézanne no longer depicted the impression of the object, but only its essence.”

Jeff Wall (Canadian, born 1946)
“I have always admired Cézanne.”

Philly Beer Week 2009

Friday, February 13th, 2009

20 Days until Opening Tap

Over 445 events at dozens of venues

in the city and suburbs
And more to come!

The second-annual Philly Beer Week (PBW) 2009 will kickoff on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m., in the spectacular Comcast Center lobby and Winter Garden (17th street and JFK Boulevard) with the Opening Tap, a celebration honoring over 30 regional breweries whose beer help make Philadelphia “the best beer-drinking city in America.” The Opening Tap will begin with a ceremonial ‘first tap’ using the official Philly Beer Week Keg Mallet, followed by a strolling beer tasting and a festive awards ceremony. Opening Tap tickets cost $40 and can be purchased online at www.phillybeerweek.org ($50 at the door.)

“The Opening Tap is a one-of-a-kind event featuring our local breweries and their beers, as well as the men and women who create them,” says Don Russell, who along with Tom Peters and Bruce Nichols are the founders of Philly Beer Week.

Invited breweries for the Opening Tap include: Appalachian Brewing, Barley Creek Brewing Company, Brew Works, Dock Street, Dogfish Head, Earth + Bread, Erie Brewing Company, Flying Fish, General Lafayette, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, Lancaster Brewing Company, Legacy, Lion, Manayunk Brewpub, McKenzie’s, Nodding Head, Penn Brewery, Philadelphia Brewing Company, Porterhouse, Reading Brewing Company, Riverhorse, Rock Bottom, Roy Pitz, Sly Fox, Triumph, Stewart’s, Stoudts, Troegs, Twin Lakes, Victory, Weyerbacher, Yards and Yuengling.

A group of local beer writers created the awards that will honor each brewery represented at the event. An emcee will announce each award and invite the brewery representative to join them, get their photo taken and receive their PBW award.

“These are not your traditional “Best Of” awards. They have a definite Philly attitude! In this town, we may take our beer seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” says Russell who created the awards with fellow beer writers George Hummel, Bryan Kolesar, Lew Bryson, Jack Curtin, Suzanne Woods, Rich Wagner, Woody Chandler and Carolyn Smagalski.

Food will be available for purchase from the Market at the Comcast Center, and live music is also planned. Attendees must be at least 21 years of age, and no children will be admitted.

Those wishing to take public transportation to Philly Beer Week, can purchase Sip Safely with SEPTA, an unlimited, all-day, bus-trolley-rail pass that will be sold for $9.00, valid any one day between March 6 and March 15. This pass is valid on SEPTA services, to encourage PBW participants to travel safely, rather than driving from event to event. Sip Safely with SEPTA passes are available for sale at most SEPTA locations.

Blanche DuBois, a faded southern belle, takes us on a journey of delicate indiscretions, lost dreams and bruttish actions into her own madness, aided by her handsome, masculine brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski.

CAST YOUR VOTE FOR MISS TEENAGE HAIRSPRAY 1962!

This fall, treat yourself to the blockbuster musical that has a “firm hold” on audiences and hairdos - HAIRSPRAY!  It’s 1960s Baltimore, and ”rats on the street dance around your feet”, but there’s one hip teenager who sees the world through hot-pink colored glasses.  That girl is the big-hearted and big-haired Tracy Turnblad (Amy Toporek), and she “can’t stop the beat” as she shakes and shimmies her way into changing the hearts and minds of teenage America.  Tracy’s the kind of girl that can bring out the razzle dazzle in her frumpy mother, Edna (Michael Walker), win the heart of teen dream, Link (Josh Young), help her best friend, Penny (Liz Kimball), learn that love is colorblind, and set the road to righteousness ablaze with sassy Motormouth Mabel (Joilet Harris).  With friends like these, plus a few backup singers providing “doo-wops” along the way, Tracy will be dancing her way to change in America!  She’s big, she’s brassy, and she’s beautiful: she’s Tracy Turnblad, and the Walnut Street Theatre officially endorses her for Miss Teenage Hairspray 1962.  Don’t miss seeing this beauty queen live on our stage in HAIRSPRAY!

FA LA LA YEE-HAW, THE BOYS ARE BACK
IN TEXAS THIS CHRISTMAS!

Audiences went wild for the outrageous comedy Greater Tuna last year, and now our two favorite Christmas hams, Benjamin Lloyd and Jon Zak (pictured left) are back in the saddle for A TUNA CHRISTMAS at the Independence Studio on 3.  These two amazing actors tackle over 20 zany characters from Tuna, Texas, including the beloved radio station duo of Thurston and Arles.  This time, it’s the day before Christmas, and not a creature is stirring, not even an armadillo.  All comic heck is breaking loose as poor Bertha Bumiller copes with seasonal traumas, such as a disaster-prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and Vera Carp’s yard decorating contest that is being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom!  A TUNA CHRISTMAS is the best way to laugh off all that holiday drama, and maybe a few pounds from the Tastee Kreme’s Christmas special.  It’s okay to laugh at the people you love in A TUNA CHRISTMAS!

Deck Our Halls With Your Tackiest Ornaments!

Remember being a kid at Christmas?  Decorating the tree used to be the most exciting thing in the world.  You could throw tinsel with reckless abandon and make the multi-colored tree lights blink as much as you want.  Mom and Dad would never mind.  Now that you’re adults, every year you have to untangle strings of lights, and some people may even have professional decorators festoon the tree with colors that match the new wall color.  And don’t even think about putting anything but white lights on that tree!  Had enough yet?  Well, let your inner child run wild at A TUNA CHRISTMAS.  Bring us your tackiest, loudest, gaudiest ornament and put it on our “Tacky Tuna Christmas Tree.”  The tree will be a Texas themed Christmas tree in the Independence Studio on 3 lobby, and we’re hoping this tree will be so loud that we can light up the entire theatre with it!  Be a kid again, come see A TUNA CHRISTMAS and laugh along with the Walnut!

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It took two extra nights, but the Phillies have finally put an end to Philadelphia’s 25-year major sports title drought.

Eric Bruntlett scored on a Pedro Feliz single in the seventh inning and the Phillies beat Tampa Bay, 4-3, in Game 5 of the World Series, wrapping up the franchise’s second title in history.

Rocco Baldelli’s homer tied the game in the top of the seventh, but the Rays couldn’t go ahead as Chase Utley threw out Jason Bartlett at the plate to end the frame.

The Phillies then went in front in the bottom half of a game that had been halted by rain tied, 2-2, Monday night after 5 1/2 innings. Wintry conditions forced a postponement for an extra day, but under cold, windy conditions Wednesday, the Phillies warmed up their fans quickly and sent the City of Brotherly Love into pandemonium.

The 4-1 series victory gave Philadelphia its first championship of any kind since 1983, when the 76ers beat the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA title. The Phillies’ other World Series championship came in 1980.

Brad Lidge, who didn’t blow a save the entire year, locked down the win in the ninth, but not before the Rays had the tying run in scoring position. Evan Longoria popped out before Dioner Navarro broke his bat on a base hit to right field. Pinch-runner Fernando Perez stole second base, but pinch-hitter Ben Zobrist lined out to right field. Pinch-hitter Eric Hinske swung through a low pitch to strike out, and the Phillies piled on top of each other near the mound in celebration.

“At first I couldn’t believe it, but then the gravity of what happened just hit me,” said Lidge. “It was just an amazing feeling.”

The Phillies were here 15 years ago, but lost to Toronto in the World Series. Now they will celebrate with the rest of the city with a parade on Friday.

“I always thought we could win the World Series. I knew we could beat anybody in our league,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said, addressing the crowd at Citizens Bank Park.

Cole Hamels, who went 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two World Series appearances was named the MVP of the Fall Classic.

“This is something that you have to live for,” said Hamels. “Going out there, I knew I had a job to do. I had the support of these fans, and I had my teammates behind me.”

It was a masterful season for Lidge, who had a save in all 48 of his appearances in 2008, including two in the World Series.

Just last season, the Phillies were anointed as the team with the most defeats in professional sports history, reaching the 10,000 loss mark. Turn the page one year, and it’s a much different story.

“This is just the beginning, it had to start somewhere,” said shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who is one of several starters to come up through the Phillies’ farm system. “A lot of us wanted to change the face of this organization. We got New York right above us and it’s always seen as the Mecca. When you win a championship, people have to look down to the little guys. Right now everybody’s looking up to us.”

It was also a successful season for the Rays. Prior to this year, the most wins for the Rays, who entered the majors in 1998, was 70.

“The word is remarkable to come that far, that quickly,” said Rays manager Joe Maddon. “I believe this firmly, our guys are not going to be satisfied without playing in October from now on, and that’s a good thing.”

The Rays had just tied the contest in the sixth when B.J. Upton scored on a Carlos Pena single, but then play was halted going into the bottom half and put in suspension by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

When play resumed Wednesday before loud, towel-waving fans, Philadelphia came to bat and Hamels was lifted for a pinch-hitter. Geoff Jenkins came to the plate to face Grant Balfour, and clobbered a 3-2 pitch off the wall in right- center field past a sliding Baldelli. Rollins followed with a sacrifice bunt, and Jayson Werth sent a pop-up to short center field. Second baseman Akinori Iwamura raced back, but failed to make an over-the-shoulder basket catch as the ball slipped between his body and glove. Jenkins scored easily.

Baldelli homered with one out in the seventh, sending Ryan Madson’s first offering over the wall in left field.

The Rays then threatened to take the lead, but a smart defensive play by second baseman Utley stopped the rally. Jason Bartlett singled to left with one out, and J.P. Howell’s (0-2) sacrifice bunt advanced the runner. J.C. Romero (2-0) then came in to face Iwamura, who singled up the middle. The ball was stopped by Utley, who faked a throw to first zipping the ball to home. Catcher Carlos Ruiz applied the tag to the helmet of a sliding Bartlett.

Pat Burrell narrowly missed a homer leading off the bottom of the seventh, sending a ball high off the wall in left-center for a double. He was replaced by Bruntlett on the bases. Chad Bradford came in to face Shane Victorino, who chopped a ball to second base to move Bruntlett to third. Feliz then singled up the middle, past a drawn-in infield.

Carl Crawford singled to start the Tampa Bay eighth, but was immediately erased on a double-play grounder off the bat of Upton.

Victorino hit a two-run single in the first frame Monday night before Pena doubled and scored on a Longoria single in the fourth inning.

More on the playoffs:

Then again, who would’ve guessed Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton would shut his eyes, take a huge swing and sock a ball into the seats.

Blanton became the first pitcher in 34 years to homer in the World Series, Howard drove in five runs with two homers and Philadelphia romped over the Tampa Bay Rays 10-2 on Sunday night to move within one win of its first title since 1980.

The team of 10,000 losses could give title-starved Philadelphia its first champion in any of the four big sports since the NBA’s 76ers in 1983.

“A championship is the only way to fully reverse that thought of how the Phillies are portrayed,” said Jimmy Rollins, who sparked the Phillies with three hits and three runs. “If we get that game, I believe we will be happy, the city will be happy, there will be a big parade,” - No doubt!
