Every Thanksgiving you wake up early to watch the parade on television, and every year something grows inside of you, a feeling of discontentment. But why? How could someone be so unhappy on this day of thanks? Then it hits you. Images of giant floating cartoon characters, tap dancers and confetti flood your mind and you stand up and shout “I should be there! I should be at the parade!”

 

Music, dancing and the big man himself (Santa, of course) can take anyone back to the carefree days of their childhood. Whether reliving the good old days or creating new memories with your family, Philadelphia is the place to be on Thanksgiving.

 

The parade starts at 8:30am on 20th and Market and ends at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Make sure you get there early enough to grab a good spot along Benjamin Franklin Parkway or at the Art Museum. The nation’s oldest Thanksgiving parade will have plenty of acts to watch along with giant floats and some of today’s hottest celebrities. 

 

Now, while the kid inside of you is jumping for joy at the possibility of going to the parade, the adult in you is cringing at the thought of traffic and police barricades. Do not worry for we have rooms to spare. Beaujolais, Beauja-who?

The only thing that stinks about Thanksgiving is that it was started by puritans. And while we know that they did consume alcohol, we can probably assume that they didn’t enjoy it. Now the French on the other hand know how to celebrate.

 

Just as Americans have Thanksgiving to celebrate the end of the harvest season, the French have Beaujolais Nouveau. The third Thursday of November has been designated Beaujolais Day and is marked by the production and release of a very special wine. This wine is made from Gamay grapes and is fermented for only a few weeks before it is enjoyed.

 

Beaujolais Nouveau has become quite a celebration around the globe and is growing roots in North America as well. To help the rest of us get acquainted with this fun fall holiday, the Midtown Village is holding an event to showcase wine and the local fare.

 

On Thursday, November 18th restaurants, bars and retailers will open their doors to welcome those who wish to celebrate the fall season the “French” way. A complementary glass of wine will be offered to visitors by retailers and restaurants will also have specials available for this wonderful occasion.

An Anceint Rivalry Continues with Army vs. Navy

The only thing that has lasted longer than the Army-Navy football game has been the rivalry between these two branches of the US military. On December 11th, Philadelphia will host the 111th match-up between the United States Military Academy (West Point, NY)  and the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD). The cadets and midshipmen will be giving everything they have to win bragging rights for their school and respective branches of service.  

 

Anyone who has ever been to an Eagles vs. Cowboys game can attest to the fact that Philadelphia is often the scene to intense rivalries and matches. The City of Brotherly Love has played host to these two teams in the past (81 times in fact) and is accustomed to seeing enthusiastic fans flood the area to support their team.  Pep rallies and other festivities will be going on in the area all weekend and will be sure pump up fans, supporters and servicemen alike.

Dubbed There’s No Place Like Home, the two-week celebration features a ribbon-cutting ceremony, block party, photo exhibit and over 20 special offers. The celebration will take place concurrently with QFEST – Philadelphia’s LGBT Film Festival.

Mess O’ Fests

Max Yesgur, a local of Bethel, New York, one day decided that something needed to be done.  Something (actually, someone) needed to bring a list of the world’s greatest musicians to one place, and introduce them under one bill.  Max Yesgur took this idea, threw in some peace, love, and a splash of color(s) and the Woodstock Music Festival was born.  The idea was receated in 1994 and 1999, but it never held the same promise as it once did in 1969.

 

Max Yesgur didn’t create something new, he just made it a lot better.  Since those three days in New York, festivals in America have never been the same.

 

Festivals have become a staple of Philadelphia culture, especially during the summer months.  So, now that you know of a great place to stay while visiting (The Independent Hotel, of course), why not plan a trip revolving around one (or more!) of the great  festivals the City of Brotherly Love has to offer?

The XPNoential Music Festival is the most popular music festival in Philadelphia every year, and attracts over 300,000 people every year.  The festival has not been scheduled as of yet, but it always occurrs in July.  Stay tuned for the latest details as they become available!

Since the Independent Hotel’s June 2008 opening, the property added an artistic splash to its exterior with the showcasing of photography from local, Philadelphia based Photo-Artist, Jenny Lynn.  The windows, entitled, “Keys to The City,” display Center City’s landmarks and main attractions.  Jenny Lynn expressed of her project, “I’m delighted that my photo-installation, “Keys to the City”, has become part of The Independent Philadelphia.  I hope that visitors to the hotel, as well as passers-by, will enjoy what they see”.
